Job Description

Grace is hiring a highly collaborative Sr. R&D Scientist to work at our Columbia, MD headquarters location. As a chemist at Grace, you will be part of a research and development team and perform the following activities:

  • Support new product development and current manufacturing in the Specialty Catalyst business, with a strong emphasis on inorganic oxide supports and chemical catalysis
  • Coordinate with a team of engineers and technicians across business divisions in products selection and lead the development of value-added catalyst technologies for a broad range of chemical transformations
  • Align closely with marketing and sales to understand customer needs and provide technical solutions which are economically viable
  • Engage in technical support activities directly with manufacturing sites, balancing efforts to enhance manufacturing operational excellence with new technology growth
  • Participate in corporate, site, and workgroup safety activities

Required Skills

  • Independently devises and executes efficient experimental workplans at gram-to-ton scale to deliver project milestones ahead of firm deadlines
  • Designs/identifies/sources laboratory or pilot-scale synthesis and measurement infrastructure to gather high-quality data
  • Documents and clearly communicates findings and proposals to both technical and non-technical audiences, including customers
  • Initiates ideation with co-workers, both within the SC catalyst group and more broadly within Grace, to grow the company's technology capabilities and market share
  • Identifies inventive aspects of new technology and works with Grace legal to capture and protect intellectual property

Required Experience

  • Ph.D. Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with 3 + years relevant industrial experience, OR B.S. Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with 10 + years relevant industrial experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong experience in inorganic materials science and catalysis
  • Extensive experience with process scale-up and plant process troubleshooting
  • Prior experience with direct customer interaction
  • Experience in analytical method development and characterization of inorganic materials
  • Experience with industrial safety practices
