Job Description

W. R. Grace, a 164 year old US based company, is looking for Chemical Operators to help us meet our growing demand of products for the pharma and catalyst industries. This position performs chemical processing operations and related activities in a safe and environmentally sound manner, as directed by the Shift Supervisor and/or Lead Operator. This position is located in Albany, Oregon and works 12 hour shifts. Overtime is paid for hours worked in excess of 10 hours each day. Job Duties Include:

  • Operate chemical processing equipment and computerized control equipment with a working knowledge of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) while following detailed operating procedures
  • Record operating data such as process conditions, test results and instrument readings
  • Monitor process equipment, valves and pumps to ensure proper production conditions
  • Safely handle hazardous materials using proper personal protective equipment
  • Set up equipment such as pumps, reactors, centrifuges, and dryers in order to meet quality
  • Transfer materials to and from reactors, centrifuges and dryers
  • Ensure a clean and organized work environment is maintained at all times
  • Work rotating (monthly) 12 hour shifts

Required Skills

  • Solid mathematical skills
  • Ability to operate processing equipment and computerized control equipment
  • Solid mechanical skills with the ability to troubleshoot processing equipment
  • Effective written and oral communicaiton skills
  • Ability to be forklift certified
  • Basic understanding of chemicatry, fluid flow, and heat transfer
  • Ability to lift 45 lbs.

Additionally, you will need to be able to perform the following tasks:

  • Setting up and charging raw materials to processing equipment involving lifting, bending and squatting with up to 45 pounds.  (15%)
  • Transferring product (~2 lbs) using repetitive scooping motion with some twisting and/or turning.  (15%)
  • Pushing and pulling, to open and close valves above head height and at ground level while kneeling.  (3%)
  • Extended periods wearing chemical coveralls made of synthetic materials with sealed seams.  (Typically in combination with a respirator).  (20%)
  • Moving drums weighing up to 400 lbs. using a drum dolly or hydraulic drum lift.  Moving pallets weighing up to 1200 lbs using hydraulic pallet jack or electric fork lift.  (5%)
  • Climbing on to or off of the forklift (1%)
  • Climbing or descending stairs to access different levels of the plant.  (3%)
  • Carrying chemical hoses and pumps weighing up to 45 lbs. to set up product transfers.  (5%)
  • Monitoring equipment, record process data, perform simple analytical tests, enter data into batch records.  (33%)

Required Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

  • Forklift experience 
  • Manufacturing experience
  • Prior chemical handling experience
