Job Description

Grace is seeking a chemist to join our R&D team! This role reports to R&D Team Leader located at Tyrone, Pennsylvania. The Tyrone Site produces a portfolio of products including specialty pharmaceutical and agricultural chemicals, refinery catalysts, and performance chemicals.  Consisting of a pilot plant and custom manufacturing at the commercial volumes, the site is fully equipped to develop and manufacture custom chemicals.  Tyrone is located in central Pennsylvania within twenty-five minutes of Penn State University. The R&D Chemist will work on developing and improving processes for scale-up and plant production.  This position reports to the R&T team leader at Tyrone.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for defining, developing, and demonstrating commercially viable processes for custom products with a focus on developing economical and robust processes while minimizing waste streams
  • Support production of new chemical entities during initial scale-up and process validation.  
  • Perform experiments needed to evaluate and optimize a potential synthetic route in terms of its overall yield, purity, cost, and safety.
  • Develop and share ideas for synthesizing sophisticated organic molecules.  With an emphasis on applying innovative synthetic chemistry strategies and techniques.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments including safety, engineering, analytical and sourcing to introduce new chemical processes into full-scale production.
  • Write detailed development reports documenting the laboratory research
  • Devise literature searches and utilize other resources that are needed in evaluating projects in terms of their costs, toxicity, safety, and relevant patent data.

Required Qualifications

  • Sound understanding of synthetic organic chemistry fundamentals, technical knowledge, and experience in multi-step organic synthesis, route scouting, process scale-up, troubleshooting, and optimization
  • Familiarity with modern laboratory instrumentation (NMR, HPLC, GC)
  • Ability to design and develop novel synthetic routes that can be scaled to plant assets
  • Excellent communication, organization, planning, and interpersonal skills.  Ability to interact, lead, and collaborate within an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Must be a highly productive, results-oriented individual capable of generating and implementing original ideas and solutions that contribute materially to the success of product manufacturing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. Organic Chemistry OR
  • MS Chemistry with 3-5 years of experience in organic chemistry and preferably process development and scaleup.
