Job Description

Grace South Haven is looking for a qualified and energetic chemist to join our R&D team at our South Haven, Michigan site.  The South Haven Site produces a portfolio of products for the specialty pharmaceutical industries, specifically Active Pharmaceutical Intermediates.  Consisting of a cGMP kilo lab, pilot plant and custom manufacturing at the commercial volumes, the site is fully equipped to develop and manufacture custom drug intermediates and API’s.  South Haven is nestled on the Lake Michigan Coast with beautiful beaches and fun year-round. The R&D Chemist will work on developing processes for new products to enable scale-up to the kilo lab and pilot plant settings.  This position reports to the R&T Manager.


Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for defining, developing, and demonstrating commercially viable processes for custom products with a focus on developing economical and robust processes while minimizing waste streams
  • Perform experiments needed to evaluate and optimize a potential synthetic route in terms of its overall yield, purity, and cost safety.
  • Develop and share ideas for synthesizing sophisticated organic molecules.  With an emphasis on applying innovative synthetic chemistry strategies and techniques.  
  • Work collaboratively with other technical and regulatory departments to introduce new chemical processes into a cGMP production facility.  (analytical, quality, engineering and safety)
  • Write detailed development reports documenting the laboratory research
  • Make accurate and timely recordings of experimental details into laboratory notebooks.  Also evaluate and witness co-workers notebooks
  • Devise literature searches and utilize other resources that are needed in evaluating projects in terms of their costs, toxicity, safety, and relevant patent data.
  • Support production of new chemical entities during initial scale-up and process validation.  #WRGRACE      #INDEED


  • Sound understanding of synthetic organic chemistry fundamentals, technical knowledge and experience in natural product synthesis and route scouting, process scale-up, troubleshooting, and optimization
  • Familiarity with modern laboratory instrumentation (NMR, HPLC)
  • Ability to design and develop novel synthetic routes that can be scaled to kilo lab or plant assets
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to interact, lead, and collaborate within an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Experience with laboratory automation equipment – parallel reactor technology.
  • Proven ability in problem solving and multi-tasking.
  • Ability to balance individual and team responsibilities.
  • Aptitude in the synthesis of complex organic molecules, for application towards API or an MS in Chemistry with experience in API process development and process scaleup
  • Must be a highly productive, results-oriented individual capable of generating and implementing original ideas and solutions that contribute materially to the success and development of drug substance candidates
  • Strong communication, organization, and planning skills; and a high level of technical expertise and creativity are required for success in this position.

Required Education

  • Ph.D. Organic Chemistry OR
  • MS Chemistry with 5-10 years of experience in relative organic chemistry
