Job Description

 

We're hiring an R&D Manager at our lab and manufacturing site in Pasadena, TX
The role’s primary function is to provide leadership of the site team and drive polypropylene (PP) catalyst design and R&D projects, both technically and administratively, to maximize the impact of Grace’s R&D investment.  Key responsibilities for the successful candidate include: 

 

  • Drive projects through the stage-gate process, aligning closely with Marketing and Process Technology, for prioritization of the Specialty Catalyst (SC) business needs
  • Develop sound technical hypotheses for each project, estimate required resources, and seek the correct talent for the project, both internal and external
  • Drive ideation, both within the SC catalyst groups and more broadly within Grace, to grow the company's technology opportunities
  • Identify projects to take forward into the stage-gate process, whether they originate from within R&D or from within the other business functions
  • Manage workgroup group personnel and assign projects based on capabilities and skillsets to maximize output
  • Continually audit group capabilities and resources to identify ways to improve efficiency
  • Identify inventive aspects of new technology development and work with Grace legal to capture and protect such intellectual property
  • Manage a budget, and identify capital items to improve efficiency and capability
  • Manage all laboratory safety-related activities, including audits and 5S activities
  • Serve as a member of the Pasadena, TX site’s leadership team and supports site wide programs and EHS initiatives

Required Experience

 

  • Masters degree combined with relevant catalyst experience OR Ph.D. Degree in Chemistry or a related field
  • 5-10 years of experience working in an industrial laboratory setting
  • 2+ years in a leadership/supervisory role

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Experience with inorganic chemistry, organometallics, or polypropylene (PP) catalyst design, synthesis, and commercial use downstream 
  • Experience with autoclave polymerization of polyolefin catalysts for evaluation under industrially relevant conditions.
  • Knowledge of common analytical techniques for catalyst characterization
  • Understanding of the critical elements of PP resin architecture
  • Experience with industrial safety practices for hazardous materials including pyrophoric
