Job Description

Grace is seeking a Technician Specialist to join our Evaluations Research and Services Group to support catalyst and petroleum testing for the Fluid Catalytic Cracking portion of the Refining Technologies business.  This position reports to the Lab Supervisor and is located in Columbia, MD. 


Testing in this group is essential for new product development, customer reformulation, and customer technical support. This role may rotate between several of the lab areas within the group. Typical daily activities include the safe handling of chemicals and operation of lab and pilot equipment in order to generate testing and product performance data.


  • Operate and maintain additional FCC testing equipment, including DCR (Davison Circulating Riser), ACE Catalyst testing units, fluidization test units and Steam Deactivation units
  • Conduct analytical testing on petroleum feeds and slurries
  • Log in customer and internal samples
  • Conduct specialized catalyst and/or feedstock testing and/or product testing (i.e. particle size, density measurements, reflective index, XRF, etc.)
  • Keep complete and accurate records of work done
  • Maintain a safe and orderly workplace and update safety documentation and procedures as Necessary

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma with 2-4 years relevant laboratory, manufacturing experience or an AA or BS/BA degree
  • Ability to work rotating shift (first shift is 7am to 3pm; second shift is 3pm to 11pm)
  • If a candidate prefers to work only second shift, that request will be considered
  • Ability to work overtime if necessary
  • Basis Computer Skills 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree to be preferred in Technical or Chemistry field and no experience required
  • Mechanical aptitude desired- ability to troubleshoot and repair lab scale equipment
  • Desire for continuous improvement of lab operations
  • Familiarity with computer programs such as MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint
