Job Description

Reporting to the Product Stewardship Leader, the Senior Regulatory Advisor will work with the corporate legal group and others in product stewardship to provide the regulatory support, management and guidance required to meet strategic and tactical business objectives. They will be an active champion for Grace’s product stewardship goals and ideals throughout the enterprise. The position will require interaction with regulators, technical consultants, trade association members, legal counsel, and Grace business leaders. The job location is Columbia, MD with some travel to include sporadic international travel.

Job duties include the following:

  • Lead the enhancement of Grace’s Responsible Care Product Safety Code practices.
  • Improve or develop, and coordinate implementation of practices within the business and integrated supply chain that help ensure product stewardship considerations are being adequately managed throughout the value chain.
  • Monitor emerging regulatory issues within the Americas and translate regulatory impacts into options to support business and corporate strategies.
  • Ensure chemical inventory notifications and similar filings are aligned with business objectives.
  • Working closely with R&D and marketing improve existing product stewardship processes to better support new product development.
  • Improve processes and capabilities to collect production and associated data needed to document on-going compliance with chemical control regulation (e.g., TSCA).
  • Coordinate product risk assessment work for existing chemicals of interest.
  • Improve product risk management programs to more effectively manage product safety.
  • Represent Grace in trade association working groups (e.g., phthalates, nickel and rare earth).
  • Identify, engage and manage external services providers as needed for work that cannot be supported internally due to gaps in capacity or technical experience.
  • Support other colleagues in the regional and global teams as necessary to meet local regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Develop and deliver training to employees whose responsibilities may impact Product Stewardship processes and/or systems.

Required Skills

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of global chemical control regulations (TSCA, DSL/ NDSL, REACH, etc.) to include preparation of regulatory filings with the US Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Experience in reading, understanding, and interpreting global regulatory requirements as related to business support.
  • Strong customer focus, problem solving skills, project management, and record keeping skills.
  • Communication and inter-personal skills necessary to interact effectively with regulators, technical consultants, trade association members, legal counsel, and Grace business personnel.
  • Proven ability to simultaneously lead multiple projects and utilize creative problem-solving skills, proposing solutions to resolve issues in a sustainable, sound, safe and cost-effective manner.
  • Track record of building strong relationships with internal and external partners and key customers to develop and execute product stewardship activities.
  • Ability to distill, summarize, and effectively communicate complex issues to diverse audiences and stakeholders.

Required Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in the chemical/pharmaceutical industry with significant involvement in product stewardship/chemical regulatory compliance
  • Masters (Doctorate degree preferred) in relevant field of study (e.g., environmental science, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, toxicology)
  • A minimum of 3 years of management experience required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Latin American regulations highly desired;
  • Working experience with global teams;
  • Non-English language skills a plus;
  • Hands on experience with data management systems to include SAP;
  • Experience in merger and acquisition projects; 
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification
