Job Description

Grace is seeking a Senior Environmental Manager to join our Corporate Environment, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) team! This role reports to the Director of Risk Management located at our Columbia, MD headquarters.

The preferred candidate will work with Grace’s EHSS Leadership team, business units, and functions to develop strategies and initiatives to achieve our environmental compliance excellence objectives.  The Senior Environmental Manager will provide leadership and support to manufacturing locations and the businesses for implementation of environmental programs, evaluating applicability of environmental regulations and resolving technical issues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction to the business and operations functions while supporting implementation of the Grace EHSS Policy and Responsible Care Management System.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and sustainment of comprehensive Environmental, Health and Safety Management Systems and processes (incident reporting, management of change, compliance, metrics).
  • Provide subject matter expertise in key environmental regulatory programs (e.g. air, waste management, waste water, spill prevention and emergency response, chemical toxic release inventory reporting).
  • Provide emergency response support for environmental releases occurring at company facilities, warehouses, customer locations and while in transit.
  • Monitor pending regulatory changes and advise business leadership accordingly.
  • Develop coordinated compliance plans in response to new regulations.
  • Provide technical advocacy through direct communication with regulatory agencies or through participation in industry trade organizations (e.g. American Chemistry Council).
  • Support public and stakeholder outreach programs (e.g. participation in Local Emergency Planning Committee)
  • Provide environmental subject matter support related to mergers, acquisitions, and divestments.
  • Partner with Grace site and functional leadership in the development and implementation of specific environmental activities and initiatives
  • Facilitate global sharing of learnings and best practices among Grace sites.
  • Direct causal analysis of environmental incidents and notices of violation, including development and implementation of corrective and preventive measures.
  • Travel within the US and internationally to company sites or other locations to enable collaboration.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to lead by example, work with business management and technical professionals, team with diverse businesses, develop strong partnerships, communicate, influence and build consensus. 
  • Experience in the planning, development, and implementation of EHSS management systems and environmental compliance programs, including those associated with air quality, wastewater quality, waste management, process safety, emergency planning and community right-to-know, auditing, incident investigation, spill prevention and response.
  • Knowledge of US Federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations.
  • Experience leading RCCA (Root Cause-Corrective Action) methodologies including cause and effect.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively present complex topics in a concise manner.
  • Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, Engineering or Chemistry.
  • Minimum of 12 years’ experience in environmental management in a manufacturing environment, preferably chemical or specialty chemical.   

Preferred Qualifications

  • Chemical industry experience managing environmental compliance, engineering, or productivity programs.
  • Experience with implementation of management systems to conform with relevant standards (e.g. ISO14000-series; Responsible Care Management System; etc.).
  • Knowledge of US Department of Homeland Security regulations governing chemical manufacturing facilities
  • Relevant professional certification (P.E., etc.)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SAP and SharePoint, or equivalent.
