Job Description

Grace is revitalizing its Maintenance and Reliability team and hiring a Mechanical SME.  This Mechanical SME is an engineering professional who, working with little or no supervision, can apply advanced scientific and engineering knowledge and ingenuity to complete complex assignments related to the Mechanical Engineering discipline.  In this role, you will develop standards and best practices to drive maintenance and reliability discipline across the Grace network of manufacturing sites.

There are two options for your work office location, from our corporate headquarters in Columbia, MD or Houston, TX. Depending on which location you chose. Based on which location you chose, along with the business needs/requirements, you will be expected to travel from 50-75% that will be primarily in the US. 


  • Benchmarks internally and externally. 
  • Serves either as functional Subject Matter Expert (SME) or independent technical expert in design reviews.
  • Identifies, plans, and conducts projects of various sizes/complexities within engineering specialty requiring custom, risk-managed execution plans, investigations, and/or equipment. 
  • Conceptualizes complete solutions. Creates or coordinates the design solutions for novel or complex problems; integrates regulatory and operational needs; assesses cost benefit. Structures studies and integrate cross-disciplinary and cross-functional issues to arrive at optimal course of action.
  • Mentors’ others by sharing technical expertise and providing feedback and guidance. 
  • Represents the organization as a technical contact on contracts and projects. 
  • Interacts with both senior management and external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations. 
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Engineering policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Identified as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the discipline and provides training.
  • Participates in internal, cross-divisional teams to develop and align procedures and standards. 
  • Directs the efforts of others such as engineers, technicians, and outside resources. 
  • Resolves problems and crisis situations requiring fast, astute decisions with rapid implementation by utilizing technical training and experience. 

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • M.S. degree in engineering and/or PE license are desired but not required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience, with at least a portion of that experience in maintenance and reliability programs for chemical plant equipment (static and rotating) and associated codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of PSM, specifically mechanical integrity standards.
  • Demonstrated experience in change management.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills.
  • Strong critical thinking.
  • Able to develop processes and standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in Word, Excel, MS Project
  • 5+ years of experience using SAP Systems
  • Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional
