Job Description


Grace is seeking an R&D Scientist to join our Polyolefin Research and Development team! This role reports to R&D Manager located at our corporate headquarters in Columbia, Maryland. 




  • Support new product development in the Specialty Catalyst business, with a strong emphasis on new silica or inorganic oxide catalyst supports and polyethylene catalysts
  • Work proactively with a cross-departmental team of chemists, engineers and technicians to drive development of market-leading PE catalyst technologies
  • Leverage feedback from customer service and marketing teams to provide timely technical solutions to customer needs that are economically viable
  • Engage in technical support activities within the business, both in manufacturing operational excellence and in new technology growth
  • Collaborate with the process development group to scale up and commercialize new PE support and catalyst technologies
  • Participate in corporate, site, and workgroup safety activities

Required Qualifications


  • BS degree in Chemical Engineering and at least 7-10 years related technical experience or a PhD in Organometallic Chemistry, or in Inorganic Chemistry with Organic Chemistry experience
  • 1+ years’ experience post Ph.D. strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated proficiency in highly air-sensitive chemical manipulations

Preferred Qualifications


  • Ability to clearly summarize and communicate complex technical concepts to technical and non-scientific audiences, including preparation of customer-facing reports
  • Experience with polymerization processes and polymer characterization – Prior knowledge of polyolefin polymerization catalysts considered a plus
  • Experience in analytical characterization of inorganic materials, including specialized techniques for air-sensitive samples
  • Ability to manage laboratory technicians’ day-to-day tasks
  • Independent technical project management skills
