Job Description

Grace is hiring a R&D Scientist to work at our Columbia, MD headquarters location. As a chemist at Grace, you will be part of a polyolefin research and development team and perform the following activities:

 

  • Support new product development in the Specialty Catalyst business, with a strong emphasis on silicas, inorganic oxide supports, and polyethylene catalysts
  • Work proactively with a cross-departmental team of chemists and technicians to drive development of market-leading PE catalyst technologies
  • Align closely with marketing to understand customer needs and provide technical solutions that are economically viable
  • Engage in technical support activities within the business, balancing efforts to enhance manufacturing operational excellence with new technology growth
  • Work with the process development group to scale up and commercialize new PE support and catalyst technologies
  • Participate in corporate, site, and workgroup safety activities

Required Skills

  • Independently devises and executes efficient experimental workplans to deliver project milestones ahead of firm deadlines
  • Develops new analytical capabilities and leverages them to accelerate invention
  • Documents and clearly communicates findings to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Initiates ideation with co-workers, both within the SC catalyst groups and more broadly within Grace, to grow the company's technology capabilities
  • Manages all laboratory safety related activities, performs regular laboratory clean-up and 5S activities

Required Experience

  • Ph.D. Degree in Chemistry or related field
  • 1 + years of experience working in an industrial laboratory setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 + years of experience working in an industrial laboratory setting
  • Strong background in inorganic, organic, and organometallic synthetic methods
  • Air sensitive manipulations (e.g. glovebox and/or Schlenk) experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with polyethylene polymerization processes.  Knowledge of silica supports considered a plus
  • Experience in analytical method development and characterization of inorganic materials, including specialized techniques for air-sensitive samples
  • Ability to manage a laboratory technician(s)
  • Experience with industrial safety practices
