Job Description
We’re hiring a Health and Safety Manager to work at our corporate headquarters in Columbia, MD and report to the Director Global Operational Risk and EHSSQ Assurance.
As a Health and Safety Manager, you will be responsible for Grace’s corporate health and safety programs that support the company’s “Goal Zero” safety objective – Zero Injury and Zero Process Safety Events. You will develop and implement strategic global health and safety goals, objectives, and metrics for the corporation, and identify, recommend, and implement performance improvement opportunities.
You will lead and manage a team of health and safety professionals and work closely with the corporate Occupational Health Nurse to oversee the company’s occupational, worker’s compensation and related programs.
Responsibilities
- Advise and support the development of Grace Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) policies, global procedures, practices and management processes consistent with Grace’s Goal Zero strategy and to ensure compliance with applicable health and safety regulations.
- Work with key internal Global Operations and other functional organization partners to develop and implement health and safety programs and requirements across Grace assets.
- Provide health and safety technical support and leadership in collaboration with Grace Marketing, Sales, Supply Chain, R&D, Engineering, Manufacturing and other elements of the business.
- Provide oversight to the Health and Safety Specialist responsible for supporting EHSS programs at Grace’s global Headquarters, in coordination with site management and R&D leadership.
- Support development and implementation of emergency action planning for the Columbia headquarters location.
- Work with Director, Global Operational Risk and EHSSQ Assurance to engage local agencies and regulatory agencies to represent Grace’s Columbia-based operations in his/her absence.
- Provide leadership and development of the Corporate Health and Safety team.
- Coordinate and work closely with Grace’s Corporate Occupations Health Nurse for injury/illness case management, workers’ compensation, and other health programs requiring medical expertise and collaboration.
- Track regulatory changes potentially impacted Grace’s health and safety programs.
- Lead and/or participate in Global EHS sharing and practice networks.
- Collaborate with Regional EHS Directors, Legal and other functional EHSS leads in sharing incident communications.
- Provide health and safety technical consultation, guidance, and oversight management for regulatory compliance, due diligence and integration activities in collaboration with the EHS team and other relevant functions.
- Participate and/or lead root cause investigations for actual and/or potential high-impact incidents as directed by Global Operations and EHSSQ LTs.
- Coordinated non-Grace Safety Data Sheet management programs.
- Manage internal global health and safety software systems (Cority, Sphera, etc.) through coordination with internal stakeholders, IT and Grace’s parent company Standard Industries.
Required Qualifications
- B.S. degree in Safety Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, or other related technical discipline.
- 10+ year’s progressive experience leading health and safety programs within manufacturing and corporate environments (preferably chemical or specialty chemical).
- Able to travel up to 20 including domestic and occasional international.
- Experience in the planning, development, and implementation of EHSS management systems (e.g., Responsible Care Management System, RC14001, etc.) and compliance programs.
- Knowledge of international and U.S. Federal, state, and local health and safety laws, regulations, rules and standards.
- Knowledge of Maryland-specific health and safety laws and regulations.
- Ability to positively influence others in order to advance the best interests of Grace, internal EHS goals/targets, and EHS initiatives.
- Excellent organizational and cross functional integration skills.
- Self-motivated; ability to make independent and informed, prioritized decisions.
- Strong oral and written communications skills and the ability to work in both individual and team industrial work settings with minimum supervision.
- Ability to work with operations/business/R&D leadership and other technical professionals, through diverse teams by developing strong partnerships and building consensus.
- Demonstrated success in leading and facilitating health and safety process improvements and management systems.
- Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate with senior leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of ergonomic program management and execution.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and lead by example. Prior leadership experience with direct supervisory responsibilities.
- Professional safety and/or industrial hygiene certifications are desirable (e.g., CSP, CIH, OHST, CHMM, CSHM, CSSE, CHCM or others).
