Job Description

 

Grace is seeking a Director, Sustainability to join our Corporate Strategy team! This role reports to the Senior Vice President, Strategy, Planning, and Integration located at our Columbia, MD headquarters. The preferred candidate will work with Grace leadership, business units, and functions to develop and implement strategies and initiatives to achieve our sustainability and ESG (environmental, social and governance) objectives.  Candidates must be comfortable in dealing with ambiguity and adjusting to rapidly evolving sets of internal and external expectations. This role will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to advise on policies that further our sustainability goals.
   

Responsibilities

  • Leverage operational, business, and functional expertise to facilitate the development and alignment of global sustainability strategy.
  • Provide leadership and direction on all aspects of sustainability and ESG to the Grace Leadership Team, business units, and functions.
  • Develop and lead company-wide network of sustainability practitioners to align on goals and to share best practices.
  • Lead Sustainability Capital Steering Team to ensure that Sustainability capital is most effectively used to advance Grace toward its corporate goal of achieving reductions in carbon emissions, water consumption, and waste generation.   
  • Develop management system processes and tools to ensure data quality and to ensure that disclosures meet relevant standards.
  • Lead a team of direct reports for data collection and management in support of all ESG performance reporting and monitoring progress against sustainability strategies, objectives, and targets.
  • Lead data collection and management in support of responding to customer requests involving ESG matters, including product-level environmental footprint information.
  • Collaborate with Grace the Communications team to present our sustainability strategy and performance in a compelling manner with key stakeholders.
  • Monitor emerging issues and regulations that may impact sustainability disclosures, manufacturing operations, and markets for our businesses.
  • Monitor trends and changes in customer EHS and sustainability questionnaires and various reporting systems and non-governmental organization (NGO) protocols.  Advise business leadership on trends and expectations.
  • Manage subscriptions to third-party assessment services employed by customers to manage sustainability information.
  • Primary point of contact on sustainability and ESG matters with stakeholders, including customers, governmental agencies, industry trade organizations (American Chemistry Council; Cefic, MAPI), media, NGOs, and the public.
  • Travel within the US and internationally to company sites or other locations to enable collaboration.

Required Qualifications

•    Knowledge of sustainability reporting protocols, including Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Greenhouse Gas Protocol, Sustainability Accounting Standards, Board (SASB), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and Science-Based Targets Initiative.
•    Knowledge of GHG emission calculations and verification and environmental accounting software.
•    Knowledge of data management and data analytics processes.
•    Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively present complex topics in a concise manner.
•    Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interface and communicate with cross-functional teams at all levels, and with external stakeholders such as regulators, customers, and the public.
•    Bachelors degree in Engineering or Environmental Science or a related discipline and 15+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

•    Chemical industry experience managing sustainability, engineering or productivity programs (e.g. energy efficiency; reductions of air emissions, water consumption or waste generation).
•    Experience with implementation of management systems to conform with relevant standards (e.g. ISO14000-series; Responsible Care Management System; etc.).
•    Knowledge of ESG reporting protocols used by various stakeholders (e.g. EcoVadis, S&P Global ESG; ISS; Just Capital: Sustainanalytics; etc.) 
•    Relevant professional certification (P.E., etc.)
•    Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SAP and SharePoint, or equivalent.
