Job Description

Grace is seeking a Counsel, Regulatory & EHS to join our Legal team! This role reports to Assistant General Counsel, Regulatory & EHS located at Columbia, MD.

 

As a key member of the Legal Team, the Counsel, Regulatory & EHS will support the Environmental, Health, Safety, Security & Quality organization and provide expertise on regulatory requirements for the complex global Grace business, with a focus on the major federal environmental laws (e.g., TSCA, CERCLA, RCRA, CAA) and food drug and cosmetic laws. 

Responsibilities

  • Provide well-informed, practical legal advice for Grace’s global business focusing on the application of environmental laws and chemical inventory laws to our businesses and products.  
  • Negotiate for advantageous, achievable, and adequately flexible terms in contractual and permitting contexts. 
  • Negotiate with state/federal agencies in the context of inspections and enforcement actions. 
  • Support training on growing global food and drug regulatory requirements. 
  • Support due diligence and integration of merger and acquisition targets. 
  • Advance regulatory, commercial, and operational excellence. 
  • Analyze and advise business and manufacturing facilities on matters such as potential environmental, health, and safety operational issues and mitigation options in addition to regulatory compliance and remedial issues associated with Grace’s legacy liability portfolio. 
  • Provide regulatory, environmental, health, and safety counseling and training. 

Required Qualifications

  • Admitted to at least one bar and in good standing. 
  • J.D. from an accredited law school with Strong academic credentials. 
  • 10 + Years of relevant legal experience 
  • At least five (5) years’ experience in a government agency, law firm, trade association, and/or corporate legal department dealing with environmental regulatory compliance and enforcement matters and/or food, drug, and cosmetics compliance. 
  • Knowledge in areas such as US federal and state environmental laws and the rulemaking and enforcement (state and federal) process and food, drug, and cosmetics regulatory systems. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex information to nonlawyers. 
  • A comfort with science is essential. 
  • Some travel required.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience with TSCA and other Global Chemical Control laws a plus. 
  • Familiarity with non-US legal issues a plus. 
  • Non-English language skills a plus. 
  • EPA or DOJ or other Government Agency experience a plus.
