Job Description
Grace is seeking a Counsel, Compliance and Litigation to join our Legal team as we develop our organization to build a scalable platform for rapid organic and inorganic growth. This role reports to our Associate General Counsel, Labor & Employment and Compliance and has a dotted reporting line to the Assistant General Counsel, Environmental Remediation and Litigation. The role is located in Columbia, MD.
The Counsel, Compliance and Litigation is responsible for ensuring a strong and effective compliance program. This position requires the candidate to have the ability to develop programs, policies, training and processes to enhance Grace’s compliance culture. In addition, the Counsel, Compliance and Litigation will be responsible for effectively and efficiently managing a portfolio of claims and litigation matters.
Responsibilities
- Compliance:
- Helps develop and provide overall vision, direction, and collaborative leadership to enhance the Company’s compliance program and culture.
- Assists with the continued development, implementation and monitoring of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with laws/regulations.
- Oversees receipt, investigation and resolution of alleged violations of the Code of Conduct, company policies or other compliance requirements.
- Assures smooth operation of an effective and efficient compliance training program.
- Conducts training on compliance topics and monitors compliance training requirements.
- Litigation/Claims Management:
- Responsible for assessment of matters, development of strategy, and case management.
- Responsible for preparing risk assessment and case updates, including for the purposes of obtaining settlement authority or other necessary approvals.
- Works directly with other business stakeholders to manage the dispute and to resolve the matter efficiently.
- Selects, works with, and manages outside counsel.
- Drafts, reviews and revises legal papers, including pleadings, declarations, discovery demands, discovery responses and motion papers.
- Supervises e-discovery process.
- Identifies and develops litigation learnings.
- Manages litigation budgets and associated reporting requirements.
Required Qualifications
- J.D. with strong academic record and active member in good standing of a State Bar.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in litigation.
- The highest level of judgment, discretion, and integrity.
- Proven self-starter, results-oriented, high-energy team player with demonstrated leadership skills.
- Ability to think critically, learn new substantive areas quickly, analyze problems and data, and develop creative and practical solutions.
- Ability to assume ownership and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to clearly and accurately identify legal issues, place them in business context and provide actionable legal counsel to business leaders.
- Demonstrated ability to influence key stakeholders.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive team and environment.
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks, as well as adapt to changing situations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Global litigation and compliance experience.
- Experience supporting global corporations on compliance / legal / regulatory issues.
- Experience overseeing and/or conducting internal investigations.
