Job Description

W.R. Grace is headquartered in Columbia, Maryland. As a member of the influential Grace legal department, you’ll play an integral role in the company’s strategic direction. The Grace Legal Department is a place for the intellectually curious.  This role serves as primary legal counsel to oversee the Company's response to legal questions and matters, including policy/practice advice and counsel, response to internal clients and customers regarding commercial and contractual inquiries, and provides guides to senior business leaders for the Refining Technologies business and Procurement functions. 

Position requirements:

  • Serve as key point of contact and provide advice and counsel on legal issues impacting the company's Refining Technologies business segment (including customers).
  • Provides advice and counsel on legal issues impacting the company's operations and business (including those of its subsidiaries) specifically for the Refining Technologies business segment and Procurement function.
  • Drafts, reviews, advises and negotiates contracts, policies, procedures and other legal documents with a higher degree of complexity.
  • Researches, analyzes and advises on proposed and existing legislation and regulations for impact on the company.
  • Substantial knowledge of current law and issues within areas of specialty.
  • Initiates and leads cross-divisional and enterprise projects. Interacts and influences business to help drive business results.
  • Performs special projects (substantive, administrative and practice management) for the legal department, including those involving a higher degree of complexity, business impact or financial or personnel resources.
  • Develops and/or conducts training programs for supervisors, managers and/or employees.
  • Engages and manages outside counsel within area of responsibility in a cost-effective manner.

  • Influential.  Must promote that business partners ensure key legal perspectives are taken into account and alternative actions and outcomes are considered, even if unpopular. 
  • Must communicate effectively with all internal constituents from employees to senior management, as well as external organizations including potentially government enforcement agencies, non-governmental organizations, trade associations and outside counsel.
  • Professional and effective written and oral communication skills are critical.  Demonstrated experience following through to ensure the message is received and heard.
  • Ability to think in business scenarios, propose creative alternative solutions and articulate associated risks.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new areas and business considerations.
  • Team player.  Takes personal initiative to lead and task teams to deliver desired results.

  • Strong organizational skills coupled with the ability to compile information from multiple sources.
  • Must be able to handle company confidential information and data requiring the highest degree of attention to preserve confidentiality.

  • Must present a professional image.

Required Experience

  • Licensed attorney with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience handling commercial contracts and other commercial legal matters.
  • In-house experience preferred.
  • Strong financial acumen preferred.
