We’re hiring an Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) Manager to work at our Chattanooga, TN manufacturing site. The site is a leading global supplier of catalysts and other products and services to petroleum refiners; catalysts for the manufacture of plastics; silica-based engineered and specialty materials for a wide-range of industrial applications; specialty chemicals, additives and materials for commercial and residential construction; and, sealants and coatings for food packaging.
The EH&S Manager will report to the Plant Manager and will develop and implement objectives, targets, programs, and procedures to ensure site safety goals are met while complying with regulations and permit requirements. The position supervises and drives excellence in core EH&S management systems and processes and facilitates integration into the company’s overall business operations for compliance assurance, productivity, and growth. The position acts as the principal technical resource on radiation safety and is responsible for developing, planning, and managing radiation safety programs in compliance with the site’s license and applicable regulations.
Responsibilities
- Identify and ensure systems are in place to comply with all applicable environmental regulations and initiatives: Solid Waste, Hazardous Waste, Clean Air Act (include NESHAPs), SARA reporting, Safety Data Sheets, Spill Reporting, Groundwater Monitoring, Waste Minimization, Pollution Prevention, Radiological Health, Process Safety, RCMS, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics and others as they are identified. Provides technical expertise in these areas
- Understand and fulfill all regulatory permit conditions: Air Permits, Water Pollution Permits (NPDES, Pond), POTW Pretreatment, Radiological Health and Waste. Update all permits as needed. Develop and maintain strong relationships with Regulatory Agencies
- Maintain accurate and complete documentation of reports, applications, investigative findings, disposal, etc., and complete all reporting on time & in full compliance. Maintains sites radiological license
- Develop & implement audits and inspections program to verify compliance and performance to achieve plant goals, including safety, housekeeping, JSAs, PHRs, PSSRs, corrective & preventive actions, etc.
- Develop & implement regulatory and general training on EH&S topics. Research & incorporate best practices into training to focus on culture shift
- Develop & implement Health & Safety programs to create a strong culture of employee ownership, accountability and performance
- Manage and develop direct reports within EH&S department
- Manages EH&S budget and ensures proper supplies are available to meet plant needs
Physical Requirements and Environment
- Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials
- Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant facility with highly hazardous materials
- Ability to work in a high hazard environment, including adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and noisy surroundings.
- Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders over 100 ft.
- Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, Level A suit, full face respirator
Required Qualifications
- B.S. Degree in Health Physics, Science or an Engineering discipline
- Minimum of 5 years' experience managing EH&S or Radiological Safety in a chemical manufacturing environment
- Experience in the planning, development and implementation of EH&S management systems. Knowledge of behavior-based safety programs, incident investigation and root cause analysis
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local EH&S regulations, including local radiation safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with individuals and groups and to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels in the organization and with individuals outside the organization
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
- Ability to work with computer software and tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint)
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional safety and/or environmental experience/certifications (eg. Certified Health Physicist, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Process Safety Management (PSM), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), etc.)
- 7 to 10 years EH&S experience
