Job Description

We currently have a Reactive Hazards Engineer position open at the Baton Rouge Manufacturing Site. We are looking for an employee who will be responsible for the completion of reactive hazard evaluations for sites across the company.  

Responsibilities:

  • Perform literature reviews on thermal hazards associated with both intended chemistry and secondary reactions

  • Work with process teams to develop well-written process descriptions 

  • Identify all unique process streams that require testing

  • Coordinate with process team and labs on delivery of samples and testing schedule

  • Identify which synthesis reactions and process streams require advanced testing and the development of a kinetic model

  • Work with multiple labs to design experiments and coordinate completion of all testing

  • Coordinate with analytical group to run additional experiments to characterize elementary steps of decomposition reactions.

  • Review level of investigation detail needed to characterize reactive hazards with Reactive Hazards Process Safety Leader

  • Incorporate all elements of reactive hazard evaluation into a reactive hazard report for use by a PHA facilitator

  • Perform reactive relief design

  • Contribute to development of computer programs used to model calorimetry data 

  • Become proficient in thermodynamics, particularly in the use of equations of state and physical property estimation

  • Become familiar with linear and non-linear regression techniques, and other numerical methods for modeling data

  • Take on projects in the area of reactive hazard evaluation methodology, thermodynamics, calorimetry, or reactive relief design

  • Consult with individual sites on how best to implement robust reactive hazards programs

Required Experience

  • BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related science and/or substantial reactive hazards training and experience
  • 3+ years of chemical process industry experience with a strong knowledge of unit operations and process safety practices

Required Skills

  • Good understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals, chemical processes, and equipment
  • Skilled in data interpretation
  • Able to work effectively with colleagues across the company and across divisions
  • Solid communication skills in writing reports and correspondence as well as in delivering presentations to the technical community and to management
  • Specific technical training will be provided as necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree
  • Prior reactive hazard evaluation experience
