Job Description
The Safety Specialist is a highly visible role which actively promotes and maintains a safe working environment by conducting workplace inspections, investigating safety incidents, developing and implementing safety training programs. The Specialist is part of a dynamic Environmental, Health, Safety & Security Team reporting to the Occupational Process Safety Manager.
The Specialist ensures compliance with internal/ external safety regulations and advises management on risk mitigation strategies to prevent injuries and promote employee health and wellbeing.
The Safety Specialist is on-site in Curtis Bay, Baltimore, MD
Responsibilities
- Leads, develops and implements safety processes, programs and guidelines ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as Grace corporate requirements.
- Reviews plans, workmanship, construction plans to ensure compliance with corporate and plant procedures.
- Coordinates contractor inspection and repair work for all fire prevention systems.
- Leads and/or participates in PSSRs, RCCAs, and JSAs ensuring continuous improvement.
- Conducts safety violation, incident or unsafe work practice investigations.
- Facilitates and conducts safety training including instructor led training for mandated topics to site personnel, contractors and visitors
- Vendor management, including Cintas for Uniforms, Mats and Boots
- Work with Fastenal for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Assign and maintain locker assignments
- Develops and leads and/or assists with safety management systems
- Monthly Safety Meeting Guide
- Critical Life Safety and Safe Work Permit Training and Administration
- Maintain safety shower and eyewash stations
- Gas Detection Equipment Management
- Fall Protection Equipment Inspection
- Fire Protection System
- Serves as Radiation Safety Officer, after mandatory training
Required Qualifications
- Highschool diploma or equivalent
- 5+ years of experience in safety, training and industrial hygiene or related operational/maintenance experience in a manufacturing setting.
- Strong demonstrable knowledge of applicable regulations (OSHA, NFPA, etc).
- Availability for on-call and after-hours work
- High level of personal motivation, with a drive for ownership and accountability in performance of job responsibilities.
Physical Requirements and Environment
- Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, Level A suit, full face respirator
- Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders over 100 ft.
- Ability to work in a high hazard environment, including adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and noisy surroundings.
- Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials
- Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant facility with highly hazardous materials
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Safety/Industrial Hygiene or other technical discipline or equivalent safety experience in a manufacturing environment.
- 5+ years progressively responsible experience in safety, training and industrial hygiene or related operational/maintenance experience in a manufacturing setting
- Demonstrated experience using computer applications such as MS Office and other specialized support systems
- Experience working with regulatory compliance in a manufacturing and laboratory setting.
- Demonstrated experience providing consultation and advice to a diverse audience effectively.
- Experience handling multiple compliance tasks and decisions with minimal supervision
