Job Description
  • Supervise the PC Lab personnel and monitor job performance. 
  • Scheduling of PC Lab, assuring 24/7 coverage of the PC Lab.  Be proficient in all tasks of the Process Controller in order to provide coverage in emergency situations or to cover vacancies.
  • Drive a positive safety culture.  Develop and provide safety training to Analysts working in lab on unique hazards present.
  • Responsible for ensuring the correct disposal of hazardous waste generated in their lab.
  • Subject matter expert on equipment, methods, and specific grade needs in the Silica plant, understanding the scientific fundamentals of the tests and the limitations of the tests.  Provide expertise on test methods as required to other Grace locations.
  • Works with ASC to resolve discrepancies in test results between PC Lab and ASC.
  • Responsible for the quality, reliability, and integrity of the data from each method and instrument in their lab. Ensure proper SPC and calibrations are completed.  Perform trends analysis of standards.
  • Serve as the liaison between ASC and PC Lab; and in particular with the Analytical Chemist - Physical Characterizations for methods questions, as well as the Analytical Reliability Coordinator for equipment maintenance / reliability issues.
  • Attend daily plant production performance review meetings (GMS).  Communicate testing / quarantining status to the plant and pro-actively identify opportunities for the plants and lab to work better together by optimizing sample types and frequency. 
  • Manage visual factory for lab via use & development of process control data (dataparc) and GMS short-interval control boards.
  • Provide thought leadership and drive continuous improvement in the lab, looking for opportunities to improve workflow, equipment, automation and data handling.
  • Troubleshoot equipment when problems arise, providing on-call 24/7 support if question arise.
  • Manage resampling of finished product for the silicas business, including imported products at the Warehouse.  In this function, serves as key contributor to assuring on-time customer shipment.
  • Responsible for training & qualification program for analysts in the PC Lab.   Continually improve and develop skills of analysts working in lab area.
  • Act as the Document Control Officer (DCO) for the PC Lab.  Responsible for updating existing Work Instructions and Specification Cards for the lab, adding new cards as new grades are created, and aligning with lab system (LIMS) specifications.
  • Manage ISO and GMP conformance for the PC Lab area.  Assist with the preparation of 2nd and 3rd party audits for the Silicas plant, and participate as appropriate.   Supports customer complaint investigations.
  • Assure that lab supply management is completed in expected time frame with appropriate consumable and equipment inventories.
  • Manage specialized testing plans and assist in new grade trials to support plant operations and troubleshooting.
  • Conducts data sourcing and analysis to identify trends and in support of quality improvement projects.  Leads continuous improvement activities with Operations team to improve yield loss, first-pass quality, and COPQ.
  • Controls overtime.  Manages payroll/Kronos accuracy.
  • Performs additional duties as need, as assigned by the Grace site leadership team.

Required Experience
  • B.S. in STEM discipline
  • Minimum 3-5 years professional experience with demonstrated leadership qualities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commitment to continuous development and increasing their knowledge of analytical methods and equipment.
  • Familiarity with Six Sigma tools. Green Belt or higher desirable.
  • Familiarity with a production manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with a high-paced production lab environment.
  • Prior experience in 24x7 laboratory setting preferred.
