Job Description

W.R. Grace & Co., a leading manufacturer of Specialty Chemicals has an immediate need for a Production Engineer at its Curtis Bay facility.  W.R. Grace Curtis Bay consists of 10 production plants that manufacture hundreds of products from four product lines:  fluid cracking catalysts, hydroprocessing catalysts, polyolefin catalysts, and silicas.  With approximately 500 employees, W.R. Grace is a significant employer in the Curtis Bay area.  More than half of the products manufactured there are exported at a value of approximately $150 million annually.

Responsibilities

  • This position is responsible for product quality monitoring, analysis and control (response charts, sampling plans, GLIMS templates, quality release, CAR's ISO, etc).  
  • Prepares standard operating conditions, interprets process results, recommends & implements corrective action for optimum plant operation (stream rate, yield, quality, CPK/Ppk, cost, etc) and applies Six Sigma and Lean methodologies to improve processes.  
  • Determines and implements corrective action, conducts economic studies for optimization of production rates and costs, and for justification of projects concerned with plant changes and/or fixed capital additions, and supports the commissioning/start-up of the projects.  
  • Prepares or assists in preparation of process designs including equipment specifications, PFD's, P&ID's and SOP's for modification of additions to existing plant and provides training for the Operations Team. 
  • Ensures that the plant meets PSM and ISO requirements and incorporates these standards into daily work.
  • This position will also work closely with PT and Quality to ensure the smooth functioning of the process.  
  • Monitors and optimizes raw material yields including waste tracking and minimization (RCRA, SARA, Title V, stack testing, etc).  
  • Updates operating procedures, PFD's and P&ID's to account for process changes and maintains conformance to PSM (PHA, MOC, PSSR, etc).  
  • The candidate will be a team member of the Operations Area and may backfill for Operations Planner/Operations Leader.  
  • Uses Six Sigma tools to drive productivity and performance improvements and other duties/assignments as necessary.
  • Assures regulatory compliance, including environmental, process safety and a safe workplace for all employees.  
  • Addresses hazards, deviations, and injuries in a timely manner.
  • The successful candidate will be able to learn processes quickly, work well with others at all organizational levels, organize and prioritize multiple tasks and changing priorities, lead and/or participate on cross-functional teams and troubleshoot DCS and plant problems.

Physical Requirements and Environment

  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant facility with highly hazardous materials
  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders over 100 ft.
  • Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, Level A suit, full face respirator
  • Ability to work in a high hazard environment, including adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and noisy surroundings.

Required Qualifications

•    2 – 5 years engineering experience
•    Experience in a PSM facility preferred
•    BS Degree in Chemical Engineering.  Alternative engineering degree could be considered based on experience.
•    Must be able to maintain focus on Safety and Environmental in all activities and wear requisite PPE.
•    Ability to work effectively within a team environment (leading and participating) with excellent interpersonal skills, make data driven decisions and implement recommendations, and learn and use Six Sigma tools to improve plant operations.  
•    Must have excellent communication (verbal and written) and strong ability to influence others.
•    Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot plant equipment and process data.
•    Strong organizational skills, including leading ad hoc teams. 
•    Six Sigma and Lean experience preferred (Green/Black Belt Certification)
