Job Description

Process Controller

 

The Process Controller is part of the Process Control (PC) Lab.   The Team works in a fast-paced environment and the Controller uses their strong communication and prioritization skills diligently. 

 

They collect product samples from production, prepares them for testing, performs tests, analyzes results, and makes data-driven process decisions. The decisions the Process Controller makes can significantly impact plant performance. They also ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety standards, while identifying, reporting, and resolving hazards.

 

The Process Controller is on-site in Curtis Bay, Baltimore, MD and reports to the Process Control Lab Lead.

Responsibilities

  • Performs chemical analyses and scientific tests using both routine and techniques in compliance with safety standards.
  • Collects, analyzes, and processes laboratory samples.
  • Records results of tests, organizes data, performs basic computations, and prepares reports and analyses using standard procedures and guidelines. Active participation in required local safety programs, along with the ability to work safely and maintain a clean and orderly lab environment.
  • Operates, maintains and makes basic repairs to laboratory test equipment, apparatus, systems and supplies.
  • Provides a basic level of product knowledge, assists in trouble shooting, basic start up, and proper application.
  • Interacts closely with the Operations group in a team environment to assure effective group dynamics
  • Use statistics and SPC tools to evaluate data and trends to effectively identify changes in process and/or instrumentation behavior; and responds accordingly as appropriate
  • Recognizes and promptly investigates any test results not within established specifications, including monitoring and verifying key process attribute trends.  Follows established protocols to address out-of-specification situations, up to and including stopping the process
  • Manages and stocks lab supplies on each shift, up to and including ordering new inventory
  • Accountable for compliance with all Critical Life Safety Policies, Environmental, Health and Safety Training, policies and procedures.  

Required Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) OR 2 years of experience in a laboratory environment 
  • Knowledge in basic chemistry and math  
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated adherence to safety protocols and guidelines
  • Experience working independently, and self-directed, according to changing priorities   
  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills

Physical Requirements and Environment

  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant facility with highly hazardous materials
  • Ability to work in a high hazard environment, including adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and noisy surroundings.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders over 100 ft.
  • Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, Level A suit, full face respirator

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a laboratory environment with demonstrated analytical, quality control and/or product sample testing for specification requirements 
  • Experience using Microsoft Office suites, laboratory systems and other similar enterprise-wide systems
