Job Description

The Oregon plant of W. R. Grace & Co. manufactures fine chemicals for a broad range of pharma, biotech and nutraceutical customers and specialty catalysts for polyolefins and specialty chemicals. We are currently seeking a Process Safety Management (PSM) Engineer to enhance our dynamic team. 

The Process Safety Management Engineer will have primary responsibility for developing and managing the Process Safety program and compliance obligations at the Albany, Oregon facility.  The Engineer will work with process technology, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), operations, maintenance, and other individuals to perform risk assessments, oversee and help maintain up-to-date Process Safety Information, perform engineering calculations, support and provide oversight in the change management process, and collaborate with other members of the site team to champion improvement in the site process safety culture and management program.  Pay range is $95,000 - $115,000, depending on knowledge, skills and experience.


  • Provide expertise in interpretation and application of Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP), codes and standards
  • Facilitate Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) per Grace internal standards and industry best practices.  Evaluate risks and safeguards and recommend appropriate engineering controls and layers of protection for mitigation of events.  Assist the site manager and PSM Manager in ensuring all PHA and LOPA recommendations are tracked to resolution and closure within the required timelines
  • Manage the documentation of site Process Safety Information, in collaboration with other site personnel, to ensure documentation is accurate, accessible, current, and owned
  • Review and approve engineering calculations and modeling related to pressure relief system design, material and energy balances, consequence analysis, safety instrumented system design, and inherently safer design & safeguard evaluation
  • In conjunction with the site R&D team, ensure Reactive Hazards Evaluations/Studies (RHS) are conducted and followed for all applicable chemicals and processes in accordance with Grace internal standards and industry best practices
  • Collaborate with the site Maintenance Manager to ensure the site Mechanical Integrity program, including the Inspection, Testing, and Preventative Maintenance (ITPM) plan, is conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements, RAGAGEP, and internal standards, and is tracked for effectiveness
  • Steward the site Management of Change (MOC) and Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) processes, and ensure changes are properly managed and documented in accordance with regulatory requirements and Grace procedures
  • Lead or participate in Incident Investigations and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) per Grace internal standards and industry best practices, and present reports and findings to company leadership

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years industry experience, including at least 2 years working in a PSM-covered facility in a PSM role
  • Exhibit courageous leadership and take immediate action to call attention to potentially high-risk conditions to prevent catastrophic outcomes
  • Background in operations, process design, mechanical integrity, and/or process safety
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite
  • Subject matter expertise in application of Hazard and Operability (HAZOP)/What-If, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Root Cause Analysis, Management of Change, Pressure Relief System Design, and/or Process Control
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and within a team environment (leading and participating) with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • High level of personal motivation, with a drive for ownership and accountability in performance of job responsibilities
  • Commitment to the highest level of integrity and ethical standards
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels in the organization

Preferred Qualifications

  • SAP software experience
  • PHAWorks (or other PHA software, i.e. PHA Leader) software experience
  • Potential periodic travel to the Corporate Headquarters in Columbia, Maryland, and other Grace sites may be requested
