Job Description

The Oregon plant of W. R. Grace & Co. manufactures fine chemicals for a broad range of pharma, biotech and nutraceutical customers and specialty catalysts for polyolefins and specialty chemicals. We are currently seeking a Process Engineer with an emphasis on Process Safety to enhance our dynamic team.  

The Process Safety Process Engineer will have responsibility for helping develop and manage the Process Safety program at the Albany, Oregon facility.  The Engineer will work with the process technology, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), operations, and maintenance groups at the facility to develop Process Safety Information (PSI - process technology, equipment and hazard information), perform engineering calculations (i.e. relief device design, material/mass and energy balances), perform risk assessments, support and provide oversight in the change management process, and collaborate with other members of the site team to champion improvement in the site culture and process safety management program. Pay range is $85,000 - $95,000, depending on knowledge, skills and experience.

Responsibilities

Job Duties and Responsibilities include:

 

  • Perform engineering calculations and modeling related to pressure relief system design, material and energy balances, consequence analysis, safety instrumented system design, inherently safer design and safeguard evaluation
  • Support preparation for and participate in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) per Grace internal standards and industry best practices.  Recommend appropriate engineering controls and layers of protection for mitigation of risk.  Assist those responsible for executing recommendations in corrective action resolution and closure
  • Assist in the development and management of site Process Safety Information (PSI) in collaboration with other site personnel, to ensure documentation is accurate, accessible, current and owned
  • In conjunction with the site R&D team, ensure requirements identified during Reactive Hazards Evaluations/Studies (RHS) are considered for all applicable chemicals and processes in accordance with Grace internal standards and industry best practices
  • Collaborate with the site Maintenance Manager and team to develop and verify the site Mechanical Integrity program, including the Inspection, Testing, and Preventative Maintenance (ITPM) plan in accordance with regulatory requirements, RAGAGEP, and internal standards
  • Support the site Management of Change (MOC) and Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) processes, and ensure changes are properly managed and documented in accordance with regulatory requirements and Grace procedures
  • Participate in Incident Investigations and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and per Grace internal standards and industry best practices, and present reports and findings to company leadership

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite
  • Exhibit courageous leadership and take immediate action to call attention to potentially high-risk conditions to prevent catastrophic outcomes
  • High level of personal motivation, with a drive for ownership and accountability in performance of job responsibilities
  • High level of curiosity with a desire to be a lifelong learner
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and within a team environment (leading and participating) with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to the highest level of integrity and ethical standards

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6+ months experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in a Chemical manufacturing environment
  • Design software experience (i.e. Dynochem, Aspen)
  • SAP software experience
