Job Description


As a Maintenance Engineer at Grace’s Pasadena, Texas, specialty catalyst plant, you will be a key member of the site’s maintenance and reliability team. A willingness to expand your knowledge through training and self-discovery will be necessary as this position will be the primary technical contact supporting boilermakers, I&E technicians, mechanics, and mechanical-integrity inspectors. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring that site assets are operated and maintained to the highest standards to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the plant and the lowest cost of ownership. Job duties will include the following: 


  • Perform all work in accordance with all applicable company policies and procedures.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting for site assets, such as piping systems, pressure vessels, and machinery. Coordinate external technical expertise as necessary.
  • Develop detailed work scope for asset repairs and overhauls.
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for incidents and equipment failures using methods such as Five Whys, Apollo Root Cause Analysis™, TapRooT®, etc. 
  • Support site process safety management (PSM) processes such as management of change (MOC), process hazard analysis (PHA), layers of protection analysis (LOPA), hazard and operability studies (HAZOP), pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR), etc.
  • Develop and implement training and procedures for the operation, maintenance, and repair of site assets.
  • Define pipe inspections, prepare reports, and generate corrective maintenance notifications based on inspection findings.
  • Prepare inspection packages and manages the site mechanical integrity program.
  • Ensure that maintenance procedures, site standards, repair plans, etc. comply with recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices (RAGAGEP).
  • Identify, develop, and manage small reliability improvement projects.
  • Perform mechanical integrity analysis such as Risk-Based Inspection (RBI), Pipeline Integrity Management (PIM), Fitness for Service, etc.
  • Ensure that the correct parts and materials are on hand by identifying necessary spare parts, determining appropriate inventory levels, and updating the equipment bill of materials (BOM) for assets. 
  • Minimize working capital in stores by consolidating spare parts where possible, reviewing slow-moving inventory for potential removal or decreased stocking levels, and analyzing sparing strategies.
  • Create, edit, and update procedures, drawings, and documents as necessary to maintain current and accurate information.
  • Own and manage the preventive maintenance (PM), predictive maintenance (PdM), and condition-based maintenance (CBM) strategies for all site assets.
  • Perform quality assurance inspections for new projects, equipment overhauls and repairs, etc. as necessary on site and at vendor locations.
  • Assist in the development of quality control and quality assurance documentation and requirements for projects, overhauls, and repairs.
  • Assist in the specification and review of mechanical equipment for capital projects.
  • Assist in the scoping, planning, and execution of site turnaround activities.
  • Assist with the commissioning and start up of equipment as necessary.
  • Engage in plant safety programs such as behavior-based safety observations, 5S efforts, etc.
  • Participate in the site on-call rotation.
  • Assist with site priority repairs and emergencies as necessary, including nights and weekends.
  • Work overtime as necessary to ensure that deadlines and commitments are met.
  • Performs all other job duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Must be able to read, understand, and apply technical information from industry standards, manuals, books, drawings, diagrams, etc.
  • Must be able to enter confined spaces with and without a respirator. Must be clean shaven while at work.
  • Must be able to stand, walk; use hands to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.  Also, must be able to sit, climb, or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and lift and/or move greater than 50 pounds with assistance. Must be able to walk up stairs or climb ladders to heights above 100 ft.
  • Must be able to use computers and software such as Microsoft Office programs, SAP, etc.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering from an ABET accredited school.
  • One to five years or more of chemical plant or refining experience preferred.
  • Experience with API 571 inspections and repairs, knowledge of metal damage mechanisms, and experience with RBI are not required, but preferred.
