Job Description

All employees have Environment, Health and Safety roles and responsibilities, and are accountable for achieving compliance with our EHS Policy, including Emergency Preparedness and Response as defined in site-wide documentation. An I/E Tech may be required to work a rotating shift schedule, work overtime, and work holidays as business dictates. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment must be worn when required.

The I/E Tech III position requires high level technical and practical knowledge in the field of Industrial Electricity and Instrumentation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Comply with all plant environmental, health, safety, and process safety standards and procedures.  Report hazards, deviations, and injuries in a timely manner.
  • Comply with all Company policies, procedures and quality standards as well as participate in quality and process improvement initiatives as required.
  • Operate forklift and powered industrial trucks.
  • Maintains timely compliance on all safety, health, environmental, and training initiatives.
  • Provides assistance to other crafts and production groups with process and systems troubleshooting.
  • Diagnoses problems on process control and electrical systems and gives direction on the repair of the system.
  • Installs, connects, disconnects, removes, tests, calibrates, and repairs electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electronic measuring, controlling, recording, and indicating systems and equipment.
  • Disassembles instruments and equipment, and inspects components for defects; repairs, replaces component parts and circuitry, and reassembles.
  • Performs preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance as required to maintain equipment in optimal condition.
  • Assists engineers and supervisors in formulating test, calibration, repair and evaluation plans and procedures to maintain equipment and problem solve process variation issues.
  • Uses various hardware and software technologies such as, but not limited to, SAP, EDMS, Data Loggers, calibrators, Infrared Cameras as tools to support craft functionality 
  • Communicates effectively with co-workers, supervisors, other crafts, contractors, production groups, vendors, and OEM suppliers.
  • Performs general housekeeping and maintains orderliness.

Required Skills

  • Provides job feedback to supervisor or leader.
  • Reads and interprets manufacturer’s maintenance and instruction manuals to assist in proper installation and troubleshooting of electrical and process instrumentation equipment.
  • Prepares and uses sketches, diagrams, blueprints, and other drawings.
  • Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduits and raceways.
  • Pulls wiring through conduit and other raceways.
  • Maintains all cable and wiring.
  • Maintains lighting and heat trace systems
  • Disconnects, reconnects, installs, removes, troubleshoots, and generally maintains motor control, process control, burner control, and electrical distribution devices and systems.
  • Maintains site electrical infrastructure and grounding system.
  • Repairs faulty equipment or systems.
  • Performs minor welding and cutting.
  • Works with low, medium, and high voltage electrical distribution systems including transformers, primary and secondary switchgear, motor control equipment, fuses, breakers, and cabling.
  • Reads and interprets various drawings such as, but not limited to, electrical schematics, conduit schedules, equipment drawings, control drawings, loop sheets, P&ID’s, etc.
  • Performs preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance as required to maintain equipment in optimal condition.
  • Performs meter readings.
  • Understands the NEC and NFPA 70e and can use the book as reference.
  • Maintains substation equipment
  • Fabricates and terminates electrical/instrument panels, junction boxes, and cabinets
  • Verifies proper fuse sizing, disconnect sizing, wiring sizing, and motor sizing per NEC and industry standard.
  • Configures, sets up, and calibrates various pieces of equipment such as, but not limited to, PLC’s, variable frequency drives, power quality systems, overload devices, and others.
  • Complete all training requirements and regulatory testing, and attend safety meetings as required.
  • Supports Maintenance Excellence and Productivity initiatives.
  • Participates in training initiatives to maintain and improve skills.  Assists others with training initiatives as required.  Completes required testing within specified time frames.

Required Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with:

a. Minimum 3 years of related experience working with industrial instrumentation OR a

minimum 3 years of related experience working as a commercial or industrial electrician.

b. Documentation supporting completion of acceptable training in Instrumentation.eg. ISA CCST Level II or qualified in-house program, or Academic Degree in related technology OR documentation supporting completion of acceptable training for an electrician.

eg. Journeyman program, or trade school, or qualified in-house program

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply concepts of mathematics, basic algebra, and geometry. Ability to apply complex software to analyze measurement data for process control improvements.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Forklift license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk; use hands to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear.  The employee must navigate stairs and/or ladders. The employee must lift and/or move up to 55 pounds, and lift and/or move greater than 55 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus..

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts, and may be exposed to toxic ( including high and low pH ) and/or flammable materials. The employee is exposed to extreme temperatures within the working environment, including outside weather conditions. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions: high, precarious places; potential fumes or airborne particulates; potential risk of electrical shock; and vibration.  The noise level in the workplace is loud.

Preferred Qualifications

a. Candidates are expected to successfully pass testing (written and hands-on) prior to entering the Maintenance Department

b. Successful completion of all testing and training requirements to meet I/E Tech III classification. The position requires a strong technical background in industrial electrical, electromechanical, combustion, and process control systems.It requires self-motivated individuals with strong problem solving skills capable of effectively and efficiently troubleshooting complex process control loops and other instrument device failures. It requires a strong ability to read, comprehend, and interpret schematics, loop drawings, P& ID’s and other technical resource manuals.It requires specialized software knowledge base skills and the ability to perform calculations and conversions.Must be able to communicate effectively to many different management levelswithin the organization. The job requires leadership skills to the extent that other crafts and coworkers may be directed by diagnoses of failure and repair.Possess working knowledge of the National Electric code and NFPA 70e.
