Job Description

Health and Safety Specialist

 

The Health and Safety Specialist supports our global headquarters and largest Research & Development facility.

 

The Specialist leads health and safety compliance programs, technical systems, and regulatory initiatives which protect employees and enable safe, efficient operations.

This role is on-site in Columbia, MD, and reports to the Manager, Health and Safety.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and monitor health and safety programs, including process hazard analyses, job safety analyses, and emergency response drills.
  • Ensure systems and policies are in place to meet requirements for industrial hygiene, ergonomics, contractor safety, and Responsible Care® initiatives.
  • Manage health and safety tracking systems and ensure timely data entry and reporting.
  • Develop and deliver regulatory training on health and safety topics; maintain training records in accordance with company and site policies.
  • Support chemical safety compliance through oversight of new chemical approval processes and radiological health protocols.
  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to verify compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other applicable health and safety regulations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of safety audits, incident investigations, compliance reports, and regulatory filings.
  • Investigate workplace incidents and prepare root cause analysis reports with corrective and preventive actions.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to execute process safety programs specific to pilot plant and laboratory operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, OR 5+ years relevant work experience.
  • Experience engaging employees across the organization in support of a proactive safety culture.
  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office products:  Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Experience developing and presenting to a wide audience

Physical Requirements and Environment

  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders over 40 ft.
  • Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, Level A suit, full face respirator.
  • Ability to work in a high hazard environment, including adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and noisy surroundings.
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant facility with highly hazardous materials
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Chemical Engineering or a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math degree
  • 5 years of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) experience in a chemical research & development (R&D) or industrial setting.
  • Professional safety and/or environmental certifications (CSP, CSSE, OHST, etc.)
  • Experience using enterprise environmental, health, safety, or similar database software.
