Job Description

Grace Baton Rouge is currently seeking a Polymer Lab Technician to complete day-to-day polymerization reactions to support both commercial production and R&D.  This person is required to follow existing chemical procedures, standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety and environmental policies, and normal laboratory practices.

Responsibilities include:
•Understand chemical reactions for Polymer Lab, especially ethylene and propylene-based polymerizations 
•Collaborate with R&D chemists to determine optimal recipes, alterations, and recommendations for new products
•Properly follow standard operating procedures.  This includes setting correct reaction conditions and executing a polymerization in the polymer lab
•Provide consistent and reliable run data from all reactor systems within the lab 
•Communicate test results and operating issues to polymer lab manager; coordinate run schedule with research and developmental chemists and management
•Maintain equipment in good working conditions, identify problems when equipment is not operating properly, and maintain good housekeeping standards
•Utilize Sharepoint and excel to collect/record reaction information and maintain data in organized fashion
•Run basic polymer characteristic tests (e.g., melt flow rate) as needed
•Have an understanding on how ethylene and propylene gases are purified 
•Be able to run purification system with all raw material feedstocks
•Understand column absorbent material and proper ordering
•Troubleshoot equipment issues when system is not working properly or to escalate to supervision as needed
•Must adhere to all corporate, plant, and laboratory safety and environment procedures and policies 
•Look for areas to improve and provide recommendations and suggestions to area management in order to improve our safety and environmental practices
•Additional responsibilities and expectations could be added based on experience and job level.  Examples could include developing procedures, designing improvements, building equipment, maintenance coordination, priority setting, leading improvement programs, writing work permits, and LOTO activities.
•Willing to work overtime as needed depending on workload and priority for the lab’s customers

Required Skills

•Basic knowledge in Microsoft suite (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)

Required Experience

B.S. in a scientific field (preferable chemistry, engineering, or polymer science)

Preferred Qualifications

•Prior lab experience running polymerization reactors or high-pressure systems
•Proficient in Swagelok tubing design, installation, and operation.
•Experience handling pyrophoric chemicals and working in a drybox.
•Experience operating a forklift
