The Oregon plant of W. R. Grace & Co. manufactures fine chemicals for a broad range of pharma, biotech and nutraceutical customers and specialty catalysts for polyefins and speciality chemicals. We are currently seeking a Process Safety Engineer to enhance our dynamic team. 

Job Description

The Process Safety Engineer/Leader will have overall responsibility for managing the Process Safety program and compliance obligations at the Albany, Oregon facility.  The Engineer/Leader will lead risk assessments, maintain up-to-date process safety information, perform engineering calculations, oversee accountability in the change management process, and collaborate with other members of the site leadership team to champion improvement in the site process safety culture.


Job Duties include: 

  • Lead the site Process Safety program in compliance with OSHA 29CFR 1910.119 Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals, EPA Risk Management Plan 40CFR Part 68, and good industry practices in process safety management.
  • Serve as the primary site process safety resource for consultation with site personnel and business team members.
  • Provide expert advice in the interpretation and application of Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP) codes and standards.
  • Facilitate Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) per Grace internal standards and industry best practices.  Recommend appropriate engineering controls and layers of protection for mitigation of event.  Assist the site manager in ensuring all PHA and LOPA recommendations are tracked to closure within the required timelines.
  • Manage the documentation of site process safety information (PSI), in collaboration with other site personnel, to ensure documentation is accurate, accessible, and up-to-date.
  • Perform engineering calculations and modeling related to pressure relief system design, consequence analysis, safety instrumented system design, and inherently safer design & safeguard evaluation.
  • In conjunction with the site R&D team, ensure requirements for Reactive Hazards Evaluation are followed for all applicable chemicals and processes, in accordance with Grace internal standards and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with the site Maintenance Manager to ensure the site Mechanical Integrity program, including inspection, testing, and preventative maintenance is conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements, RAGAGEP, and internal standards.
  • Steward the site Management of Change (MOC) and Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) processes and ensure changes are properly managed and documented in accordance with regulatory requirements and Grace procedures.
  • Conduct or participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Incident Investigations per Grace internal standards and industry best practices, and present reports and findings to company leadership.
  • Work with the site manager and operations leadership to develop and implement practices to manage process safety risks related to operating discipline and conduct of operations, such as Walk the Line.
  • Assist site EHS staff in reporting and analysis of process safety incidents per Grace requirements.
  • Track process safety metrics relevant to site operations, and use data to drive improvements in process safety practices and culture.
  • Conduct internal facility walk-throughs and audits for hazard identification and continuous improvement.
  • Support PSM audits at the Albany site, and periodically participate as an internal auditor for PSM audits at other Grace facilities.
  • Provide training for all site employees to understand process safety as a discipline, regulatory obligations, and individual & group responsibilities related to process safety.
  • Participate in Process Safety industry groups to stay current on process safety practices and changes to regulations, including American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) or American Chemistry Council (ACC) Regional Process Safety Networks, and others.

Required Skills

  • Subject matter expertise in application of HAZOP/What-If, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Root Cause Analysis, Management of Change, Pressure Relief System Design, or Process Control
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and within a team environment (leading and participating) with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • High level of personal motivation, with a drive for ownership and accountability in performance of job responsibilities
  • Commitment to the highest level of integrity and ethical standards
  • Exhibit courageous leadership and take immediate action to call attention to potentially high-risk conditions to prevent potential catastrophic process safety incidents.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels in the organization

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years industry experience, including at least 2 years working in a PSM-covered facility
  • Background in operations, process design, mechanical integrity, and/or process safety
